Blog 4: The Implications with Future Reproduction

The idea of developing and reproducing outside of the maternal body does not seem like an entirely far-fetched idea. As a society, there are already options for artificial insemination as well as neonatal intensive care nurseries that assist an infant in similar ways as a womb would when he or she is born ill or premature. This possibility of technoscience is very real and I believe that there will be both negative and positive implications to the future development of this concept.

This will positively impact women because they now have the independence to continue their lives without having to change their professional and social habits while pregnant. The assumption here is that the artificial pregnancy will create an environment that supports healthy baby development at the same rate if not more so than if the baby were developing inside a women. This also empowers women that cannot physically have a child due to health implications. The independence and empowerment here would positively impact both women within society as whole, as well as feminist scholars, because they have the opportunity to research and analyze these changes.

The negative implications here are the movement away from natural birth and the costs that are inevitable with so much technoscience research and development. It would not be an easily accessible option for many women due to the costs involved with treatment.
